GDP is an indicator of economic size and strength. According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United States has a GDP of $21.4 trillion, making it the world's largest economy, followed by China, Japan, and Germany. Italy's GDP is $2 trillion, ranking eighth, and Brazil's GDP is $1.8 trillion, ranking tenth. Texas' GDP is $1.9 trillion, exceeding the entire annual GDP of Brazil.

The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is now home to 24 Fortune 500 company headquarters, trailing only New York and Chicago; 40 years ago, the region had fewer than five. The population has surged almost three times faster than the average for the nation’s 50 largest metros. Much of this growth has come from net domestic migration.
